Tiger Achievement 4 – How I Tell it

Visit a television station, radio station, or newspaper office. Find out how people there communicate with others.

TV: Sometimes the Local Access TV Station is willing to produce a TV show where the cub scouts are the stars. They learn about TV production first hand and it’s fun for the kids (my local station did this for my son’s den). It’s also a great opportunity to promote an event for your pack (popcorn or other sale, volunteer activity, recruitment, etc.).

You can usually find information about your town’s Local Access TV Station on the official town government website. There is also a Wikipedia page devoted to some of the stations in NJ. Click on the link to go the website of your town’s TV station.

Newspaper: Your local newspaper is always looking for content in both the printed and digital versions. It’s a good way to promote a pack activity or upcoming event. Call them to find out if they can give a tour of their office and have the boys deliver your event information to them in person. Bring a picture for publication; the kids love to see themselves in the paper!

Radio Station: As far as I know, our Pack never visited a radio station so I am unsure if they give tours to cub scouts.  I was thinking maybe a college radio station might be more willing to do that. They’re in the business of learning and teaching, right?

I found a list of radio stations in NJ.  I saw that there’s a few that broadcast from the town’s school district (Atlantic City, Morristown, West Windsor-Plainsboro). Maybe your school is one of them and you won’t have to travel far.
